Donald Trump and many other Republican politicians are eager to reopen schools in the United States even though more and more Americans are getting infected by the coronavirus.
In a series of tweets and interviews, Trump stated that Democrats prevent children from going to school for political reasons.
Trump went on to make the false claim that children can be in classrooms without causing major new coronavirus outbreaks. He went on to point to the numerous European countries that have reopened schools.
What Trump failed to say is that most of the countries which have children on their premises waited until after their infection rates fell before reopening schools.
In the U.S., the rates are growing rapidly. Trump said: “In Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and many other countries, SCHOOLS ARE OPEN WITH NO PROBLEMS. The Dems think it would be bad for them politically if U.S. schools open before the November election, but it is important for the children & families. May cut off funding if not open!”
He said the following while talking to reporters: “Open our schools. Stop this nonsense. It is political. They don’t want to open because they think it will help them on November 3rd. I think it’s going to hurt them November 3rd.”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently did an interview on CNN, where he backed Trump by comparing the reopening of public schools in the state to reopening of companies like Walmart and Home Depot.
DeSantis claimed: “We spent months saying that there were certain things that were essential — that included fast-food restaurants, it included Walmart, it included Home Depot. If fast food and Walmart and Home Depot and look, I do all that, so I’m not looking down on it — but if all that is essential, then educating our kids is absolutely essential.”
He added: “But I’m confident if you can do Home Depot, if you can do Walmart, if you can do these things, we absolutely can do the schools. I want our kids to be able to minimize this education gap that I think has developed.”
In an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield explained that no revisions would be made to his agency’s guidance on schools reopening and added: “It’s not a revision of the guidelines, and it’s just to provide additional information to help the schools be able to use the guidance that we put forward.”
